Zooey Deschanel Likes What She Likes

Say what you will about Zooey Deschanel and her choice of attire, but the star of Fox’s comedy series, New Girl, likes what she likes.

“Fashion is way of communicating,” said Eva Chen’s latest cover girl. “You’re saying, ‘Hi, world! How are you? This is me today. Take me or leave me!”

So what is it that the 34-year-actress likes? Dresses. “I remember playing in the dirt when I was two years old,” she said. “My mom took me back to the car to change into a clean outfit, and I started crying because I had to put on jeans. I knew I like dresses. I was always very aware of clothes.”

“The funny thing is, people think I never break out of this one box,” she said. “I like what I like. It has nothing to do with trends or being a slave to fashion. Sometimes things will be in style and they’re classic and look great, and sometimes… I think it’s important to recognize when fashion has gone to a place that isn’t cute.”

Cute. Often a word that is used to describe Deschanel’s style but it’s actually more contrived than that.

“If you look at anyone with great style—Jackie Onassis, Audrey Hepburn—they have certain silhouettes that they don’t really stray from,” she said, speaking the personal style gospel.

Perhaps that’s why her latest venture, a clothing collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger which will retail at Macy’s, isn’t too far off from her own aesthetic.

“I’ve always wanted to design my own clothes, and it was important that they’d be affordable. I didn’t want to exclude anyone,” Deschanel said. “The dresses are really fun.”

After all, that’s really what it’s all about, right?

“Sometimes the fashion world can get overly serious. The whole point is that it should make you feel good about yourself. If it doesn’t, walk away.”
