Considering ultra-violet is the color of the year, according to Pantone, we predict that it will soon saturate everything from home décor to lipstick. It’s “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade,” says the company of the color. Purple is also said to signify an unswerving steadfastness to a cause, which couldn’t be more relevant given today’s climate. “I see this as very much an optimistic color, an empowering color,” Pantone vice president Laurie Pressman told the Associated Press. And what is more empowering than a swipe of bold lipstick?

You’ve seen it on fashion-forward celebrities like Katy Perry, Priyanka Chopra, and Rihanna, who is credited in part for Pantone’s color choice, but we get it, you aren’t totally convinced you can pull off a purple lip. Thing is, it’s shockingly flattering. “Purple is an unexpected bold lip color that seems hard to pull off, but you can make it work for you by choosing shades that are a bit more pink or purple,” says celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose in a statement for Lancôme.

Because purple has both cool and warm undertones, it tends to look good on all skin tones. Plus, purple lips can be interpreted in many different ways—matte, sheer, shimmery, deep, vibrant. A sheer finish can help the shade seem less intimidating while a matte formula really packs a punch. Whatever you choose, just keep the rest of your makeup simple—a skin-evening foundation, defined brow, and a few swipes of mascara is all you need.

Still not sold on a purple pout? Allow these seven lipsticks to finally convince you.
