Say it, believe it, create it. Turns out that getting exactly what you want out of life may be as simple as willing it — and speaking it — into existence via an affirmation. “An affirmation is a statement that you want to come true or want to embody,” explains manifestation expert Payal Aggarwal, founder of the Affirmation Addict Instagram account and podcast. “It’s a belief you speak out loud or write down, even if at the current moment you don’t believe it.”
The theory: By repeating these statements, your brain will start to believe what it hears, and putting this type of positive energy out into the universe can ultimately create a new reality. (Ever read The Secret?) Not only is it incredibly easy to incorporate affirmations into your day-to-day routine (more on that in a minute), but they can be used for any and every facet of your life, from career to romance to health to self-love, says Aggarwal.
So, what exactly should an affirmation sound like? “It’s important to find or create statements that connect with you, but as a general rule, there are three main things that are important to incorporate,” she says. First and foremost, an affirmation has to be a positive statement, so nix any kind of negative words or language. Two, it should be said or written in the present tense, not the future.
Finally, try to truly embody what you’re saying: “Give yourselves room to believe it. It will feel weird the first few times, but the more you repeat it, the more you’ll believe it,” notes Aggarwal. Again, it’s important to find affirmations that resonate with you, but a few of Aggarwal’s universal go-tos include: “I love myself unconditionally,” “Money flows to me easily,” “I know that everything is happening in my favor,” and “I’m ready for my soul mate to come into my life.”
Once you find the affirmations that works for you, Aggarwal suggests taking a few minutes every morning to say them out loud and/or write them down. “Doing your affirmations in the morning is a really nice way to start the day, and you only need to do so for a few minutes,” she says. It can even be while you’re in the car on your way to work or as you’re getting ready for the day. And there you go, you’ve created a super simple affirmation routine for yourself. Now all you have to do is sit back and get ready for the love/success/confidence and anything else you want to come into your life.
