Much To Do In Machu Picchu (Video)

Peru is one of the most beautiful countries in South America, and, for those lucky enough to travel there, it’s abound with things to do and sites to see. One of the most iconic experiences is visiting the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. In this video, travel host Guy Fenton gives us a glimpse of his Machu Picchu tour.

He starts his Peruvian journey in the city of Cuzco, a city nestled among the Andes mountain range. It is truly one of a kind.

“I’ve never seen a city just resting in the mountains like this before,” Fenton says.

From Cuzco, Fenton travels to “one of the world’s most important archaeological monuments,” the hidden city of Machu Picchu. In order to reach Machu Picchu, Fenton takes a luxurious train trip aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham. From Cuzco to the ruins of Machu Picchu, the entire trip takes only about two hours.

“This train has everything,” Fenton describes, “live Peruvian music, five star local cuisine, and breathtaking views.”

Cuzco certainly is beautiful, but Machu Picchu is otherworldly. Archaeologists believe that the Incan manmade wonder was originally built as a retreat for Emperor Pachacuti and his royal court and guests.

“As I explore Machu Picchu, I feel like I’m wandering through a big stone maze,” says Fenton. “It’s so much fun. It has a very mysterious feel about it, and it’s really cool to imagine how the Inca people lived here back during the 13th to 15th centuries.”

While in Machu Picchu, keep an eye out for the llamas and alpacas that have roamed around the grounds since the Incan times. The adorable, fluffy creatures are prized for their furs, which are used in textiles. Also keep an eye out for the local artisans that showcase Peruvian weaving techniques.

Eventually, Fenton takes off to do some hiking around the beautiful ruins, but leaves with one final thought, “Being one of the manmade wonders of the world, Machu Picchu is definitely something to experience at least once in your lifetime.”
