Los Gigantes beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain is where personal trainer Roger Snipes likes to go to get away from the hustle and bustle of city living.
“Living in England, it’s simply unrealistic to expect to find a tropical paradise in the dead of winter without spending lots of money,” says Snipes.
At least that’s what Snipes thought before he discovered the secret island paradise of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Here exists a natural beauty that is more akin to Africa or the Caribbean, not Western Europe.
“As you can see right now, it’s a bit touristy,” says Snipes, surrounded by other visitors.
However, over the course of Snipes’ travels to the island, he has managed to escape the tourists and find some of Tenerife’s best-kept secrets. In this way, visitors can really experience the private, secret island life of their dreams.
First, Snipes heads to the Anaga National Park, where all of Tenerife’s natural beauty is on full display. After hiking up about 3,500 feet up into the mountains, expect to enjoy a spectacular view of the Tenerife coastline.
While hiking, Snipes comes across a local shepherd jumper. Shepherd jumpers travel quickly up and down the steep mountains in the area using only a spear.
“For hundreds of years, these shepherd jumpers have used these same techniques to herd their goats,” says Snipes.
Later on, in the town of Taborno, Snipes has the opportunity to try some local cuisine of the Canary Islands.
As a fitness expert, Snipes is also a big proponent of eating healthy. For other travelers looking to stay trim during their travels, Snipes recommends eating the local dishes and shying away from tourist traps.
“There’s no denying that local cuisine is a large part of embracing a new culture,” says Snipes. “More often than not, it’s grown or raised nearby and in a much greener way than you would find in a city market.”
As Snipes winds down his day, he muses on what makes Santa Cruz de Tenerife so special.
“Aside from the weather, it’s the little things that I’ve discovered here that I find so incredible,” says Snipes. “For me to be able to have a morning workout on the beach and go trekking up the mountains an hour later, it’s just unbelievable.”
