Michelle Williams Says She Was Suicidal While in Destiny’s Child

Michelle Williams is the latest celebrity to come clean about her struggles with depression. While guest hosting The Talk on CBS, she revealed she has battled the disorder since her teens and even experienced suicidal thoughts during the height of Destiny’s Child’s fame.
“I’m in one of the top-selling female groups of all time, suffering with depression,” she explained to hosts Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, and Sheryl Underwood. “When I disclosed it to our manager [Mathew Knowles] at the time, bless his heart, he was like, ‘You all just signed a multi-million dollar deal. You’re about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?’”
“So I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m just tired,’” she said. “I got really, really bad… to the point I was suicidal. I was to that place where it got so dark and heavy because sometimes you feel like ‘I’m the provider, I take care of people, I’m not supposed to be feeling this way—what do I do?’ I wanted out.”
Following in the footsteps of public figures like Sinead O’Connor, Lady Gaga, Adele, and Kristen Bell, Williams said she was inspired to speak out in order to “normalize” discussions of mental health and make people struggling with depression feel less alone. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 16 million adults in the U.S. alone suffer from depression, and women are more likely to be affected than men.
