Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are officially husband and wife, following a week of lavish wedding festivities in India. The traditional celebrations began on Wednesday, November 28 with a Hindu ritual prayer called puja. Family and friends gathered at the Mumbai home of Chopra’s mother, Dr. Madhu Chopra, to commence the union. The couple then jetted off to Jodhpur, where a number of ceremonies, including a Christian ceremony and Mehndi, Sangeet, and Haldi ceremonies, were held honoring the heritages of both families.
The wedding was held at the Umaid Bhawan Palace, a royal palace with a five-star hotel. Before heading down the aisle, the couple kicked off the weekend with a Mehendi ceremony, which traditionally takes place two days before the nuptials. During this ceremony, intricate henna designs are applied to the bride’s hands and feet while close friends and family gathered around. Chopra was glowing, wearing vibrant Indian colors by by Khosla Jani by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, while Jonas was dressed in an embroidered kurta.
“One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures. And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so amazing,” Chopra wrote on Instagram. “An important part of the pre wedding rituals for the girl in an Indian wedding is the Mehendi. Once again we made it our own and it was an afternoon that kicked off the celebrations in a way we both dreamed.”
Following the Mehndi ceremony, friends and family were invited to a Sangeet ceremony — what can only be described as pre-wedding dance party. The traditional Indian celebration involves singing and dancing, and everyone seemed to be having a blast. Nick and Joe Jonas performed, and the bride-to-be performed a choreographed dance with her mother.
“It all began as a fierce song & dance competition between the families but ended, as always, as a huge celebration of love,” Chopra captioned a clip on Instagram. “Each family telling our stories through song and dance, filled with lots of laughter and love. We were both filled with gratitude for the effort, the love and the laughter and will carry the memories of this special evening for the rest of our lives. It is an amazing start to a lifetime of togetherness for our families and friends.. #grateful.”
On Saturday, fireworks lit up the sky as the couple exchanged vows at the palace. According to People, the Western wedding ceremony was officiated by the Jonas’ father, Pastor Paul Kevin Jonas Sr., with the bride and groom exchanging Chopard rings. The groom’s brothers, Joe and Kevin Jonas, along with Chopra’s brother Siddharth, served as groomsmen. Chopra’s bridal party was made up of close friends, and her soon-to-be sister-in-law Sophie Turner was said to play a part, too.
The multi-day event came to an end on Sunday with a Hindu ceremony. Following what can only be described as the celebrity wedding of the year, Jonas and Chopra later stepped out for the first time as a married couple, happy as can be.
