Julianne Hough has been an open book when it comes to her journey of self-discovery, and now she reveals that she’s “not straight.” The 31-year-old dancer and America’s Got Talent judge opened up to Women’s Health about coming to terms with her sexuality in her marriage to NHL star Brooks Laich.
For the magazine’s annual “Naked Strength” issue, Hough bares it all while getting real about her personal discovery. She explained that she was hesitant to tell her husband about her sexuality, for fear that he wouldn’t understand. “I was connecting to the woman inside that doesn’t need anything, versus the little girl that looked to him to protect me,” Hough told the magazine. “I was like, ‘Is he going to love this version of me?’ But the more I dropped into my most authentic self, the more attracted he was to me.”
Now, Hough says the pair, who married in 2017, are closer than ever. “I [told him], ‘You know I’m not straight, right?’ And he was like, ‘I’m sorry what?'” Hough continued. “I was like, ‘I’m not. But I choose to be with you.'”
She added: “I think there’s a safety with my husband now that I’m unpacking all of this. And there’s no fear of voicing things that I’ve been afraid to admit or that I’ve had shame or guilt about because of what I’ve been told or how I was raised.” Because of their open communication, Hough says they now “have a more intimate relationship.”
Earlier this month, Hough revealed that she and Laich had gone through sex therapy when things became a bit rocky in the intimacy department. Professionals applauded the pair for being honest about their issues and seeking help, and it looks like they’re only continuing to be transparent. As Hough told Women’s Health, her growth doesn’t end here. “I’m going to shift for the rest of my life. I’m not like, ‘Oh, I got it.’ But I’m trusting myself now, and when I’m totally connected to me, I feel full.”
