Unfortunately, miscarriages are an extremely common occurrence. In fact, studies reveal that 10 to 25 percent of clinically recognized pregnancies will end in a miscarriage. Even so, this doesn't prevent it from being something many women feel alone in. Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell is hoping to reach these women in her new YouTube video, which offers an intimate look inside her current pregnancy and previous experience with miscarriage.
The video is part of the 32-year-old's video series, "Almost Ready," which takes fans along on her pregnancy journey. In June, Mitchell and boyfriend Matte Babel announced that they were expecting their first child together -- and that Mitchell was already six months along, which was a major surprise to fans.
As Mitchell reveals in her new video, titled "Keeping a Secret," she waited so long to announce her pregnancy due to a heartbreaking miscarriage she suffered in 2018, which she first announced in January 2019. She says that it made her "feel broken as a woman."
"The first time that I was pregnant last year, Matte and I hadn't been planning, it happened and we were really excited about it," Mitchell explains. "I was like 14 weeks, at that point I had no idea the percentage of miscarriages. When it happened I was just, completely blindsided by it."
In a particularly emotional moment, she reveals that she still has ultrasound photos from her first pregnancy. "Of course I'm like super happy, but I still feel for that one that I lost," Mitchell says.
The actress is also shedding light on other difficulties during pregnancy. In one clip, Mitchell gets emotional as she shares how isolating her situation is. "This is the shitty part of being pregnant when no one knows," she says through tears. "You can't go out to see anyone, you don't want to see anyone. I don't feel myself."
Mitchell has received an outpouring of support not only for her pregnancy, but for the way she's choosing to share the realities of what many women go through. "Everything you feel is 1000% valid!!!" writes one fan in a YouTube comment. "I can't believe she had a miscarriage but I understand how she feels so much," another says. "No matter how many children, you won't be able to replace the one lost, and I feel for her. Shay is going to be an awesome mother with her maturity and wisdom!"
