7 Ways To Detox Your Scalp For Healthier Hair
By BRIE SCHMIDT
Start With A Scrub
Just as you might exfoliate your face or body, you can also use a scrub to buff away buildup on your head. There are two main types of exfoliants: textured exfoliants, like store-bought scrubs that contain granules of sugar or salt and chemical exfoliants, such as salicylic acid.
Use Clarifying Shampoo
Clarifying shampoos contain strong surfactants that break down grease and grime sitting on the scalp and the roots of the hair. According to Healthline, clarifying shampoo shouldn’t be used more than once a week, as it can cause your scalp to become dry and flaky.
Pause Heavy Products
Taking a break from styling products known to cause buildup will allow you to make more headway when detoxing your scalp. Products containing silicones and oils are the worst offenders, and you should also be wary of dry shampoo, especially if
you regularly skip washes.
Give Your Head A Massage
Vigorously massaging your scalp while cleansing promotes blood flow, which boosts scalp health and new hair growth — work your fingertips into the roots, and be careful not to scratch with your fingernails. Alternatively, you can employ the help of an in-shower scrubbing hair tool.
Steam Clean Your Scalp
Steaming treatments combine steam with nourishing moisturizers to revitalize dirty, damaged scalps. Dermatologist Dr. Swati Mohan noted that steaming increases circulation, keeping the scalp and hair strong, so consider heading to the salon for this treatment.
