Can You Detox Your Armpits?
By JOSEE NG
Detoxing is great for removing toxins and renewing the body, yet people forget to detox their underarms. Deodorants and antiperspirants, though effective, clog your sweat glands and produce bacteria, which is why armpit detoxification is a great way to get rid of all the gunk that’s accumulated under your arms.
When you switch from aluminum-based antiperspirants to a natural deodorant, you will feel sweaty and probably smelly, so to make the switch more tolerable, an armpit detox will cleanse your underarms of chemical antiperspirants. One way to detox is to mix 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, and apply it two days in a row for 20 minutes.
Another effective method is to mix charcoal, apple cider vinegar, and baking soda to absorb all the oil and dirt from your armpit pores. The efficacy of armpit detoxes has been met with mixed reviews, but beauty expert Debbi Burnes says the growth of bacteria under the arms triggers odor.
Some detoxers who stopped using the traditional deodorants and antiperspirants secreted a bacteria called staphylococcus hominis, which makes the armpits smell, while non-deodorant users secreted a bacteria called Corynebacterium, which doesn’t smell as much. Armpit detoxification is a personal choice, so as long as you wash under your arms to get rid of residue, you’ll have healthy armpits.
