Common Skin Problems You Need To Look Out For
By DONNA PUDELWITTS
Eczema
Per the National Eczema Association, eczema is characterized by dry, scaly patches on the skin that cause itchiness, blisters, and sometimes skin infections. Genetics, allergies, and external factors all play a role in the development of eczema; luckily, with the right moisturizers and habits, most cases of eczema are manageable.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is caused by the immune system causing skin cells to shed quicker than normal and get trapped under the skin, creating scales known as “plaques.” It’s common for people with psoriasis to suffer from related diseases like psoriatic arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease, so it’s vital to see your doctor if you notice something’s wrong.
Ringworm
According to Healthline, ringworm is a fungal infection that results in a scaly, ring-like patch that can look like a worm under the skin. Those who play contact sports, deal with animals, wear tight clothing, or are overweight are most at risk for ringworm; thankfully, it is easily treated with antifungal medication from your doctor.
Warts
Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), warts are small raised bumps on the skin. There are several types of warts that affect different parts of the body, but they’re all extremely contagious and can cause embarrassing symptoms. If you suspect you have warts it’s best to speak to your doctor right away.
Dry And Flaky Scalp
Seborrheic dermatitis is an eczema-related skin condition that affects the scalp, causing dry scales and inflamed patches (via Mayo Clinic). Using medicated shampoos, like those that contain zinc, tar, or salicylic acid, may help you relieve symptoms at home, but if over-the-counter products don’t work it’s time to talk to your doctor.
