Does Witch Hazel Really Dry Your Skin Out? Here's What
We Know
By JESSICA CHOI
Witch hazel contains anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants, which help fight swelling and redness so many people use this to treat acne, sunburns, rashes, and insect bites. The only setback about this product is how easily it can dry out your skin.
However, the consensus amongst experts is that the benefits outweigh the risks, so instead of forgoing it altogether, esthetician Nicole Hatfield advises using it a few times a week tops to prevent over-drying. Even those with dry skin don't have to stay away from witch haze, as long as you keep your skin hydrated and use the right products.
Use witch hazel after cleansing, and then apply serums and moisturizers immediately afterward without allowing the skin to dry. Opt for hazel brands that are alcohol-free or contain low-alcohol, like Thayers or Humphreys, or have added moisturizing ingredients like glycerin and rose extract.
