Everything You Need To Know About Float Tanks
By LAURA BOJAMAA
What Are Float Tanks?
Float tanks are egg-shaped cocoon-like capsules that are soundproof, pitch-black, and filled with water that is heated at the same temperature as the human body. The sensory deprivation tanks are also filled with 1,000 pounds of Epsom salts to create a sterile environment and allow your body to achieve full buoyancy.
Benefits
The weightlessness you feel in a float tank allows your muscles and joints to relax completely which can help with chronic pain. They also reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and provide a mental boost that can stimulate creativity and concentration.
Sensory Deprivation
Getting into a float tank feels like entering a new dimension where time stands still and the world disappears around you. According to some studies, the lack of external stimuli can be referred to as a “psychedelic experience,” although you wouldn’t be in the tank long enough for hallucinations.
Brain Impact
Your brain is always working to analyze what you smell, see, touch, and hear so the lack of sensory stimulation erases your body's limits. In addition to elevating your dopamine levels, you’ll enter a meditative-like state that’s ideal for rejuvenation, learning, and exploring your imagination the effects of which will last a couple of days.
Your Float
It’s important to focus on your breathing during your float to have the best possible experience. Try not to move too much and trust the water to bring you on your calming journey because if you’re stressed, the float will have the opposite of its intended effect.
