Here's How To Tell If Your Skin's pH Balance Is Off
By KRYSTLE VERMES
Your skin’s potential hydrogen (pH) is measured on a numeric scale from 1 to 14. 7 is “average” or a neutral pH, and anything below 7 is acidic while anything above 7 is alkaline, and Dr. Anthony Youn says, “The pH of your skin is normal at 4.7,” but when this changes, the health of your skin is affected.”
One of the easiest ways to figure out your pH is by calling your dermatologist, but there are also pH test kits to determine your level at home. Over time, you can determine what things are throwing your pH off balance, such as redness and acne which are signs of high alkalinity.
Ingredients in skincare products, like fragrances and alcohol, can alter the pH profile of your skin. Once you know your skin’s pH, you can buy products designed to benefit you. Use a gentle cleanser with acidic varieties if you are looking to reduce acne or eczema or a water-based toner to reduce alkalinity.
