Here's What Happens When You Go Too Long Between Hair Washes
By ANNA DENSON
Everyone once thought that their hair must be washed every day, but now, we know that your hair type influences how often you should wash your hair. Depending on your hair type, overwashing can cause dryness, frizziness, dullness, and split ends, but shampooing once in a blue moon has its risks.
If you go for several days without washing your hair, your hair oils, yeast, and bacteria can build up and cause skin irritation and other issues, from hair loss to a scaly scalp. Using too much dry shampoo can be damaging because it can cause scalp buildup, clog hair follicles, and hair breakage; letting oil residue sit on your skin for days at a time and worsen dandruff.
Dermatologist Dr. Francesca Fusco says, washing hair “a minimum of once a week is enough. Now, if you tend to have a really oily scalp, then it's okay to shampoo every day.” Those who have heavily treated hair shouldn't shampoo every day, but if you have straight, fine hair, you can wash it more often while those with thick, textured hair can wash it less often.
