Here's Why Cold Weather Makes You Itchy And What You Can Do About It
By MARY WROBLEWSKI
Dry, chilly hair can trigger a cold or flu, sore throat, nosebleeds, dry eyes, and dehydration. Cold weather can also dry out your skin, so it’s crucial to take certain steps to combat itchy skin.
Cold air drains moisture from your skin making your skin rough and itchy and in more serious cases, the skin can crack and bleed. You may experience flaking, blisters, rashes and inflammation which can lead to skin conditions like dermatitis, rosacea, and psoriasis; in which case you should see your dermatologist.
Apply a rich moisturizer several times a day to prevent dry skin, and consider coconut, avocado, or safflower oil to deeply hydrate the skin. Use warm water and a gentle cleanser so you don’t deplete any more oil from your skin, skip exfoliating so you don’t strip your skin, and consider turning down the heat at night or using a humidifier to counteract the dryness.
