According to the Mayo Clinic, “ovarian cysts are sacs, usually filled with fluid, in an ovary or on its surface,” and usually come and go without you even noticing them. These types of cysts often form during menstruation and are called “functional” cysts; “pathological” cysts, on the other hand, occur more randomly, cause more pain, and may require treatment.

You’ll only start to notice the symptoms of an ovarian cyst if it’s too large or it becomes “twisted or burst[s] open,” says the Mayo Clinic. These larger cysts will cause either sharp or dull pain in your pelvic region, and you might feel “pressure or heaviness in your belly;” other symptoms include feeling bloated, painful sex, intense cramps, and trouble peeing.

You should seek medical attention if you experience abrupt and intense abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting, as this could mean that a cyst has burst. Ovarian cysts are common, typically don’t affect fertility, and are often easily treatable, but it’s important to know what’s normal so you can see your doctor once an ovarian cyst requires attention.
