How To Turn Yourself Into A Morning Person
By KELLI CATANA
Have A Nighttime Routine
Sleep Foundation writes that a consistent nighttime routine is essential to become a morning person, and they suggest that “you perform the same activities in the same order, night after night.” Taking a bath, reading, and meditating are all activities that can help you wind down for the day and fall asleep earlier.
Set Realistic Goals
No one becomes a morning person overnight, but figuring out how much sleep you need to function will help you set reasonable goals. According to Rise Science, “once you know how long you should sleep for each night and what time you need to be up in the morning, you can count back to work out your new bedtime.”
Change Your Mindset
According to Andy Puddicombe, co-founder of Headspace and former Buddhist monk, a change in your internal dialogue is important in helping your body to embrace those early morning hours. Attempting to be positive about waking up early can make a huge difference in shifting your lifestyle.
Follow The Light
One of the best ways to become a morning person is to seek out natural light as soon as you wake up, as it impacts your circadian rhythm. This could involve a short morning walk or simply enjoying your coffee outside; if it’s cold in the mornings or still dark out where you live, light therapy lamps can also be helpful.
Break Your Phone Habit
Try to resist looking at your phone for at least 30 minutes after you wake up to give yourself time to get up and move without becoming distracted. According to author Julie Morgenstern, checking your phone as soon as you wake up is “priming your brain for distraction,” and will not help you become a morning person.
