Just How Damaging Is Tap Water For Your Hair And Skin?
By HANNAH DARLING FENN
Hard Water Causes Dryness
Hard water contains higher levels of calcium and magnesium which can cause dryness and rashes. Dr. David Jack says, “tap water can contain high levels of dissolved chemicals such as chlorine, copper, zinc and iron” which can damage the health of your hair and nails.
Harmful Contaminants
Even though tap water is regulated, it can still become contaminated by germs and chemicals. Chemicals like pesticides, metals, bleach, and drugs are all culprits, but chlorine is also typically found in tap water and it can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to brittle hair or hair loss.
Skin Microbiome
Showering in tap water that contains chlorine can get rid of all your good bacteria, along with dirt and sweat. Dr. Rekha Tailor says, “Chlorinated water can deplete the skin of its natural oils and hydration which in turn can exacerbate skin conditions such as eczema.”
Install A Water Filter
Soft water is more gentle on the body, so you may want to install a water filter or look into getting a showerhead filter for your shower. A showerhead filter can remove chlorine from your tap water, which should reduce the amount of buildup, residue, and dryness.
Clarifying Products
If you’ve been using tap water for years, you’ll need a clarifying shampoo or an apple cider vinegar rinse to deeply cleanse the hair and remove any buildup. When it comes to the skin, using a probiotic or prebiotic facial cleanser will nourish your skin’s microbiome and repair any damage.
