Mistakes You May Not Know You’re Making With Essential Oils
By KAITLYNN BOOT
Not Storing Them Right
It is important to keep essential oils out of direct sunlight and heat, as these elements can change the chemical composition of the oil and cause it to deteriorate. Also, make sure that the lids are screwed on tight to prevent oxidation, and never store essential oils in plastic bottles since they can cause the plastic to corrode.
Not Diluting Them
The strength of undiluted essential oils may cause allergic reactions, respiratory issues, headaches, and skin irritations like blisters and burns. It is recommended to use roughly 6-12 drops of essential oil per 30 ounces of a lotion or moisturizer, and since drops can vary in size, it’s best to use a less-is-more philosophy when diluting.
Skipping Carrier Oil
Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils, alter the absorption rate, and easily spread the oils on your body. Vegetable, coconut, avocado, and argan oil are common carrier oils and all have their own unique beauty and health benefits; jojoba, olive, almond, and rosehip oil are also great options.
Mixing With Prescriptions
Certain essential oils can interfere with prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications since, per ThriveAP, essential oils contain a high concentration of active compounds. Using them with medications can lead to potentially life-threatening complications, so consult your doctor about how to mix the two safely.
Overestimating Their Power
There is anecdotal evidence that suggests essential oils are useful for health and beauty purposes, but they have not been scientifically proven to cure any disease, and most are not regulated by the FDA. It is vital not to replace traditional medicine with essential oils, since they may risk damaging your long-term health.
