The Inappropriate Outfit Melania Trump Wore At Rosalynn Carter's Memorial Service
By BRIE SCHMIDT
At former First Lady Rosalynn Carter's funeral in November 2023, most wore black, but Melania Trump stood out in an unexpected hue and was met with immediate backlash.
In the front row alongside other former first ladies, Melania's gray tweed coat with specks of black and white caught the eye of many.
According to Newsweek, the coat was layered over a black dress, and it broke the long-standing rule of wearing black, or at least dark colors, to funerals and memorial services.
Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, former senior adviser to Trump and author of "Melania and Me: The Rise & Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady," didn't mince her words in a tweet.
"Melania made this service a photo op for herself, instead of handling her apprarance [sic] with dignity and humility, she used it as a cat walk." Others shared similar views.
Andy Ostroy wrote in his X post, "She might as well have 'I really don't care, do you?' on the back of that coat... #Melania #Trump #disrespect."
However, Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and founder of The Protocol School of Texas, said gray is acceptable, adding, "Her choice of outfit was conservative and respectful."
