What To Know Before You Get A
Silk Press
By PRECIOUS UMEASALUGO
Various hairstyles can be achieved with curly hair, but a silk press is a safe and temporary option that does not use harsh chemicals. It combines a blow-out, which straights the hair, and flat-ironing, which adds a silky smooth finish.
You can DIY this process, but we recommend getting it done by a professional hairstylist with the expertise and the necessary tools. Depending on the salon and where you live, a silk press can cost anywhere between $50 and $200.
If you want to DIY; wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo and follow up with a hydrating shampoo. Then, use a deep or leave-in conditioner, divide your hair into sections, detangle, and apply heat protectant before blow drying. Once dry, use a flat iron on a low to medium heat setting, on small sections.
On average, a silk press can last between two and three weeks. Refrain from re-straightening your hair, avoid long hot showers, hydrating sprays, saunas, and any place with high humidity; always wear a silk scarf to bed to protect your press from frizz.
