Bella Hadid couldn’t be more excited to return to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show for the third year in a row. The 2018 show, which films today in NYC, promises to be the “most ambitious” yet with 60 of the world’s top models walking the runway. We got a chance to catch up with Hadid backstage while she got ready for the big night, where she filled us in on how important it is to be “physically fit and mentally prepared” for the iconic runway.
While the supermodel admits to living a healthy lifestyle and focusing on fitness year-round, as you would imagine, prepping to strut your stuff in lingerie isn’t as simple as doing daily squats. “It’s more about making a great mindset for yourself,” she says. “You have to have a lifestyle change for a few months, which is actually quite nice because you have to really push yourself and make yourself uncomfortable with different boundaries.”
When it comes to her sweat sessions, Hadid says she’s “not great” at cardio but loves floor work. “This year I just wanted to focus on a lot on toning — and my booty and my abs,” she says, crediting her newfound love of barre class for her fit figure. “I started doing barre this year. It’s an hour of really intense core work and butt work, so for me, that was the best thing I did. I definitely saw a real change in my body when I started doing it, and it makes me want to keep going back.”
And while she is no stranger to having her body critiqued, Hadid says her primary concern is not only looking good, butfeeling good, too. In case you missed it, she recently clapped back at body shamers who called her “too thin” after she posted an Instagram announcing her return to the Victoria’s Secret runway, writing: “All body types are different and react differently to a great workout routine and a healthy diet.”
She also says that working out with fellow models who are prepping for the show (like her sis, Gigi Hadid) helps keep her motivated. “You see all of the girls working out around you, and it pressures you in the best way possible,” she says. “It makes you want to look your best and feel your best.”
After months of intense preparation, Hadid is planning a well-deserved, post-show celebration — and it’s all about good food and good company. “I think us girls are gonna go to Carbone tonight and get some pasta,” she reveals. “I’ve also been craving Prince Street Pizza. I have a photo of it on my phone and I keep thinking about it, so maybe I’ll get it tonight.”
Starting tomorrow, though, it’s back to work. Hadid plans on keeping up with her new workout routine regularly, even after tonight’s show. “I have a membership at my place, so I guess I’m going to have to keep going for a few more months or else I’m going to waste some money,” she jokes (anyone with a ClassPass membership certainly understands this struggle).
