At nearly 50 years old, Jennifer Lopez is at the height of her longstanding career. After concluding her successful Las Vegas residency, she announced her highly anticipated return to the road with the 2019 “It’s My Party: The Live Celebration” tour, her first tour in over six years. She’s also set to star in the upcoming film Hustlers.
So, how does she stay in dancing shape? The actress-singer-performer clearly takes good care of herself and goes hard at the gym, as proven by a recent Instagram video shared by her now-fiance and biggest cheerleader, Alex Rodriguez. In the video, the couple is at an outdoor track engaging in a series of moves, including burpees, weight lifting, and jump roping. That’s a great sweat session in itself, but they don’t stop there. One of the most intense cardio exercises they’re seen doing is running the stairs. It’s also one of the most beneficial, according to pros.
Fitness expert Pete McCall tells Self: “It feels like it’s more work because it is more work. On the way up, you’re doing a lot more hip flexion and extension — your hip is going through a much greater range of motion [than with walking or running], so you’re getting more work out of your hip extensor muscles.” It also gets your heart pumping and blood moving, building endurance while burning calories. It’s estimated that for a 130-pound woman, running up and down the stairs for 10 minutes burns around 100 calories; someone weighing closer to 160 lbs will burn around 191.
Not only are stairs a super efficient way to exercise, they’re also extremely accessible — no fancy gym equipment or personal trainers are necessary to run up a set of stairs at your local park, stadium or even in your apartment building. To get started, McCall suggests running up stairs for six to ten seconds, then walking or jogging back down for 30 seconds; do this five times and then rest. If you’re feeling up to it, repeat the entire process a few times.
Wondering what other tips J.Lo incorporates to keep her incredible figure? Water is a key factor. “Drinking plenty of water, especially before a workout, can help you push harder and get more out of your exercise routine,” she told Hello! in 2018. She also stresses the importance of properly resting in between workouts, and not pushing herself too hard. “That way,” she says. “I’m ready to hit it hard again the next day.”
