These Bath Bombs Were Designed With Your Vagina In Mind

There is no denying that bath bombs add a mesmerizing touch to your self-care a routine. But the chemicals and dyes that produce those satisfying swirls of color and fizz can put your vagina at risk of irritation or infection.

“Many bath products contain a significant number of allergens that can irritate the vulvar and vaginal tissues, which are among the most sensitive in the body,” says Mary Jane Minkin, MD, clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Yale University School of Medicine. They also have the potential to throw off your vagina’s pH balance, allowing bad bacteria to grow, she adds.

Enter Vagisil Sensitive Scents V-Friendly Bath Bombs ($4), which were developed with vaginal health in mind. Gynecologist-tested, these bath bombs are free of harsh detergents and chemicals, including methylisothiazolinone preservatives, and use fragrances that were designed for sensitive skin. They also have a pH between 4.5 and 5.5, which is within range of the external vaginal skin and can hep maintain an acidic environment around the vagina, adds Dr. Minkin.

What’s more, Vagisil’s new bath bombs contain coconut oil, shea butter, and vitamin E to calm and soothe the extra sensitive vulva skin. “It’s always nice to take a long relaxing bath especially after a hard day,” says Dr. Minkin. “However, it is important for women to make sure that the products they use in the bath, including scented bath bombs, are specifically designed for the intimate area.” Though they might not be as Instagram-worthy, V-friendly bath bombs are a safer solution, especially for women who are concerned about irritation.

Of course, some women may be affected by bath bombs and some may not. So, in general, before you drop one in the tub and watch the colorful explosion ensue, check the ingredients. Women who have had consistent issues with vaginal irritation in the past should skip the bath altogether and are better off taking a nice warm shower. (P.S. shower bombs are a good alternative.)
