Fendi's Iconic 1993 Astrology Collection Returns For Star-Kissed Summer Wardrobes

Even if you're not into astrology, there's no denying the cultural impact of the zodiac. Astrological motifs have dominated everything from tattoo trends to stationery sets for the better part of the last century. Of course, star signs are also extremely prominent in the world of fashion design, often popping up in notable jewelry, fragrance, and clothing releases.

One of the most iconic astrological releases in fashion history was Fendi's Spring 1993 collection. Designed by the legendary Karl Lagerfeld, the visionary who became the theme for the 2023 Met Gala, it expanded upon the fashion house's 1990 horoscope-inspired Spring/Summer collection. Fendi's Spring 1993 show was ahead of its time, highlighting the 12 zodiac signs in a sporty, minimalist way. Featuring a modish palette of reds, whites, and blues, Lagerfeld dressed models in bandeau tops, boyshorts, and one-pieces. Lagerfeld's love of celestial themes continued on, with the designer's own label releasing the heavenly Sun Moon Stars fragrance in 1994.

Tracking down vintage fashion, especially Fendi's highly-coveted Spring 1993 looks, can prove exceedingly difficult, even for styling pros. Fortunately, the stars have aligned for fans of Lagerfeld's early '90s work, with Fendi's recently announced Summer 2023 capsule collection heavily borrowing from the summer of 1993.

Fendi's zodiac sign styles give a nod to the past

The first indication that Fendi would revive Karl Lagerfeld's Spring 1993 vision? A colorful ad campaign with model Irina Shayk sporting curiously familiar styles for its Summer 2023 capsule collection. Shot by photographer Steven Meisel, Shayk is seen in a striking Virgo one-piece bathing suit nearly indistinguishable from Lagerfeld's original 1993 design.

Kim Jones, Fendi's artistic director, clearly drew inspiration from the past when creating the brand's Summer 2023 drop. However, there are some key differences. To start, Jones has adapted the line's color palette to suit modern tastes. In place of stark primary colors, Jones' take on Lagerfeld's astrological designs features more muted shades, such as pale, bubblegum pinks and cornflower blues. Keeping with Fendi's commitment to sustainable fashion (even the best 2023 Met Gala looks were recycled), the newly-announced summer drop also incorporates plenty of recycled materials.

If you want to get your hands on a piece of Fendi history this summer, the possibilities are endless. Silk scarf fans will be smitten by Fendi's silk bandeau Wrappy designs, starting at $240. Those partial to gold may want to explore the line's gold-finish astrology sets, priced at $650, which include a matching necklace and earrings. And, for the ultimate tribute to Fendi's Spring 1993 collection, one can dive into quintessential astrology-inspired swimsuits, available for $890.
