What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of Ariana Grande? Aside from her incredibly soulful voice, it’s probably her signature ponytail. Sure, she has worn her hair down, half up, and in topknots, but her long locks are typically pulled high on her head. And it’s always been hard to picture her with any other look…until now.
The singer just posted an Instagram showing off a totally new hairstyle, and she looks almost unrecognizable. While Grande doesn’t directly address the change in the caption (pointing to her brows instead), her hair is much shorter than usual, hitting just below her shoulders.
It’s been a big year for the 25-year-old pop star, and as the saying goes, “a woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” Perhaps it’s a post-breakup haircut, as she recently split from her fiancé Pete Davidson. Grande has also been mourning the death of her ex-boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller, and has opened up about the anxiety and PSTD she has been suffering since the Manchester bombing.
Or, perhaps this transformation has more to do with the major career success she is seeing. Grande’s new look comes following the release of her fifth studio album Sweetener, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard. She sold 231,000 albums and amassed 126.7 million streams during its opening week. Not to mention her latest single, “Thank U, Next,” quickly proved to be a hit; it also hit No. 1 on Billboard charts, broke Spotify streaming records, and has become an Internet sensation.
So, while Grande’s hair may be cut short, it’s safe to say she still has a long career ahead of her.
