Priyanka Chopra recently married Nick Jonas in one of the biggest, most elaborate celebrity weddings of 2018. She should still be celebrating, but instead she’s having to deflect comments about the 10-year age gap between her and her husband.
In her recent cover story for InStyle, the 36-year-old actress opened up about the criticism she faces — and how sexist it is. “People gave us a lot of s–t about that and still do,” she told the magazine. “I find it really amazing when you flip it and the guy is older, no one cares and actually people like it.”
Even more upsetting is when Chopra and 26-year-old Jonas first got married, one outlet published a story entitled, “Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ Love for Real?” The article accused Chopra of being a “global scam artist”, amongst other wildly unfair allegations. Her family, as well as newlyweds Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, immediately spoke out against the piece.
“Nick, Joe, Sophie, my mom, his parents, everyone was there furiously typing on their phones,” Chopra says. “They were so mad.”
Despite all the criticism, Chopra is set on ignoring the noise and focusing on her accomplishments. In addition to being one of India’s highest-paid actors, she also has some big projects in the works. This fall, Chopra will star in a biographical drama The Sky Is Pink, as well as join comedy powerhouse Mindy Kaling in a comedy about an Indian-American wedding.
And if you’re wondering how her husband feels about it all, just listen to the lyrics of “I Believe,” a song he wrote about Chopra on the Jonas Brothers’ new album, Happiness Begins: “Yeah, I know what they say, and that’s fine / ‘Cause I’m here to stay through the good and the bad times / Babe, you send me to space and you’re mine, yeah.”
