A.J. Cook Wants Ellen DeGeneres to be the New Billy Crystal
Few television shows are fortunate enough to make it to 200 episodes, and for that, Criminal Minds’ A.J. Cook is especially thankful. “Our characters are always kind of evolving and changing, and thank goodness we’re in season nine, 200 episodes,” she told Glam at The Art of Elyisum’s Pieces of Heaven Art Auction in Los Angeles on Wednesday. “It keeps the people coming back and watching.”
She shares that same sentiment for Oscars Sunday, where she’s optimistic about one A-lister’s center stage return. Find out who Cook is rooting for during the 86th annual ceremony and what she’ll be doing as Academy authorities roll out the red carpet!
Q: You just celebrated the 200th episode of Criminal Minds. What’s in store for the rest of season nine?
A: My character when through a lot—she was tortured in Afghanistan. So now, we’re going to see sort of a new JJ. She’s a little tougher, and we’ll see how that has formed her now.
Q: After being wrapped up in that role for so long, how do you draw a distinction between A.J. the person, and JJ the character?
A: It’s so easy. I’m nothing like my character—she’s way smarter than me, she’s FBI [laughs]! We’re just so different. We look the same, and that’s about it. Even that’s a stretch because I’m in FBI gear on the show. Ever since she [JJ] has become a mom, I think we have that connection. I got pregnant, so they wrote it into the show. And my son, my real-life son, plays my son on the TV show.
Q: The Oscars are finally here! What are you looking forward to the most?
A: I’m so excited to see Ellen host again. I think it’s going to be great. She’s funny without being mean. She’s just genuinely funny, and I love seeing women up there. Like the Golden Globes—it was so great to see [Tina Fey and Amy Poehler] up there hosting. I wanted to see more of them. So I’m sure Ellen will be great. And hopefully, she’ll stick around. Maybe she’ll come back again, and again, and again. She’ll be the new Billy Crystal!
Q: What about the red carpet?
A: That’s my favorite part of the show actually. I just love seeing what everyone’s wearing—you just have your little girly moment. I’ll probably be sitting on my couch in pajamas, drinking with my friends!
Q: Who do you think has been the best-dressed celeb this awards season?
A: I’ve got to say, Matthew McConaughey’s knocked it out of the park! Holy smokes! And that’s saying a lot, because I can’t remember the last time I was excited to see what a man was going to wear on a red carpet. Props to him! And Jared Leto, too. He always takes risks. Women… Lupita Nyong’o! I think she’s amazing. She takes a lot of risks that pay off, so I’m excited to see what she’s wearing. And Jennifer Lawrence. Freaking adorable, that one! We know it’s going to be Dior, but I just like her. I just think she doesn’t take it all too seriously!
