Brea Joseph is a self-taught sculptor, painter, and fabricator. In 2011, she teamed up with Kasey Erokhin (personal makeup artist to actor Richard Dreyfuss), to start their own special effects company, KBZ FX. The company works with film, television, print, military, law enforcement, and medical agencies to create special effects makeup for character and injury simulations, and has worked on motion pictures, TV shows, and with different brands. In 2012, she was featured on the second season of the SyFy show Face Off, which further propelled the company and her career. Glam caught up with Joseph as she teamed up with video game maker Sony Online Entertainment to recreate favorite characters with the power of makeup, including Firiona Vie from EverQuest, a Leopard from DC Universe Online, a Dark Elf from EverQuest Next, a Zombie from H1Z1 and Empires from PlanetSide 2. Read on to check out her packed schedule:
Wake up and turn my coffee on, get breakfast ready, and get dressed.
Wake up my daughter.
Check my emails, get my daughter dressed and fed.
Out the door to get my daughter to school by 9 a.m.
Respond to emails and coordinate six makeup and four costume opportunities in progress, create invoices, and make sure that my team of 9-10 makeup girls are set for the day and upcoming projects.
10:00- 12:20 a.m.
Back in the studio working on a custom Halloween look for Wendy Walker, Senior Executive Producer for Larry King Live and prepping for upcoming opportunities in injury simulations for military training in Virginia, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Camp Pendleton. I prep the wounds and the kits for the teams working on the jobs.
Visit the headquarters of Sony Online Entertainment, where my business partner Kasey Erokhin with KBZ FX and I have been hired to make video makeup tutorials of the video game maker’s favorite characters, including Firiona Vie, an H1Z1 Zombie, a Dark Elf, heroes and more. This is day two of the filming, where we had cameras following the process all the way through, to ultimately be edited into short how-to videos.
Pick up my daughter up from daycare and make dinner with her. This is the favorite part of my day! We then pick out her clothes for the next school day.
Get my daughter to bed and back to the studio!
9:00 p.m.- 1:00 a.m.
Refine my art pieces and costumes for the Sony Online Entertainment opportunity and the four injury trainings. Put the finishing touches on my art piece the Medusa Light Box which was sold via the San Diego Art Guild. Head back home.
Check emails, watch a little TV, and head to bed.
