Full Figure Fashion Week Set to Take Over New York City

Fashion Week is always a highly anticipated event in New York City that attracts attention from around the world. As the average woman is a size 14, unfortunately most of those walking the runway draped in designer duds don’t look like everyday people.

Full Figure Fashion Week is set to remedy the situation, as it will be hitting the Big Apple June 16-18. Offering a slew of panels, showcases, and events, the week is meant to celebrate the curvy women who use fashion to not only express themselves, but to feel comfortable in their skin. The event will also feature a few fun perks, including a photo booth and the signature cocktail entitled the Sonsi-tini, created by one of the sponsors, Sonsi. A grand finale runway showcase of independent designers, boutiques, and retailers featuring voluptuous models from around the world is set to close the close week in style.

Jill Hutchison, Sonsi publisher and general manager, was enthusiastic about their participation as well as the attention the event has already received. “As the fashion industry continues to evolve, the plus size woman is finally getting the attention she deserves,” says Hutchison.

Full Figure Fashion Week began in 2009 to help the women who make up 60% of the U.S. embrace their curves by offering clothes that are fashionable and figure-flattering. Statistics have shown that the plus size industry’s sales have increased over the past ten years, even during the current recession. Gwen DeVoe, Full Figure Fashion Week Founder and Event Producer, says that pooling the talents and resources of retailers, designers, boutique owners, and other related businesses was an opportunity to provide plus size fashionistas with a much-needed forum to address fit concerns.

“Together, we are distinctively qualified to make this event a success because we work directly with plus size consumers and understand their needs when it comes to great fitting, fashionable clothing that is readily available in stores and online,” she said.

All the events are meant to inspire, inform, and empower fashion-forward ladies in the plus size community, as well as provide an opportunity for independent designers to gain more exposure in the market. There will be workshops and photo shoot specials throughout the week for aspiring plus size models to hone their craft, as well as provide working plus size models with more professional exposure. Many in the plus size fashion blogging community will be making their way to the city for the many blogging panels and conferences on the schedule. They will also be participating in sample sales and fashion crawls during the week. Sponsors and attendees alike are excited that the inspirational events are gaining more publicity.

“This year’s event is already attracting a broad audience,” Hutchison said. “We’re really looking forward to reconnecting with our returning customers and to establishing new relationships with the real women who will continue to make Full Figure Fashion Week a success.”
