How to Create the Perfect Workspace at Home

Tomorrow is National Organize Your Home Day (seriously, who knew?!?). In honor of the quasi-occasion, we're highlighting a few tips to get your home office sifted, sorted, and straightened out. Clear out your clutter and get ready for a successful 2011!

Get a Bigger Desk
A large desk is practical because it gives you the space to spread things out, create neat piles, and keep a coffee mug without the fear of spilling. Try a desk that's at least 3-feet deep and 5-feet wide.

Invest in a Comfortable Seat
Many of us spend as much time behind our desks as we do in our beds. And yet, while we might be willing to invest thousands of dollars for a great mattress, we have a hard time splurging on a quality desk chair. An ergonomic chair costs about $250; but we think a pain-free back is well worth the price tag.

Use Task Lighting
Ceiling fixtures create dull, flat light that is at best uninspiring and at its worst depressing. Use lamps or spots to focus strong light where your hands are working.

Have a Space For Your Everyday Stuff
Keys, phone, wallets, purses, loose change, and other essentials should have a permanent home that isn't on your desk top. Designate a drawer for them, or find a nice basket so you're not taking up precious space.

Choose the Right Wall Colors
If you want an office that's soothing, calm and contemplative, go with cool colors like blue, green or violet. For an office that motivates and energizes, go with warm colors like yellow or orange. More people opt for cool colors because they are easier to stare at for hours on end.
