Required Reading: InStyle Ultimate Beauty Secrets

As a life-long bona fide beauty fanatic, our personal library is stocked to the brim with hair, skin, and makeup how-to guides. Yet for some reason, we're always looking for more magnificent manuals to add to our reading repertoire.

This one definitely makes the cut.

InStyle's latest offering, Ultimate Beauty Secrets, is an incredibly insightful handbook that features over 200 foolproof tips and tricks on how you can always look your absolute best.

Below, ten things we've learned:

1. Supplement Your Skin Routine
If you have dry skin that is flaky, consider changing up your routine and washing your face with dandruff shampoo instead of your regular cleanser once a month; this reduces the yeast levels that cause scaly skin.

2. Brighten Up
Refresh your complexion by dipping a washcloth in soy milk and resting it on your face for 10 minutes once a week. Soy is a skin brightener and contains phytoestrogen, a plant-derived estrogen that is thought to help prevent wrinkles.

3. Stay Hydrated
Keep skin hydrated on cold nights with a make-it-yourself humidifier. Hang a wet towel from the doorknob overnight (wring out the edges to prevent drips); by morning, the towel will be dry but your skin won't.

4. Adjust Your Color
To make summer foundation work in winter, dab a little foundation on your hand, then squeeze a pea-size blob of SPF 30 on top and mix until the sunscreen blends completely with the foundation, lightening it by a shade or two.

5. Moisturize Dry Lips
Lips extra dry? Combine 1 teaspoon honey with 1 teaspoon sugar to exfoliate them. Blend the two ingredients in your hand, then apply the mixture in a circular motion for 90 seconds before wiping off.

6. Avoid Smudging Your Mascara
Hold a spoon (plastic works well, and you won't miss it from the kitchen) above the upper lashes and then under the lower lashes to shield the rest of your makeup.

7. Make Short Stubby Nails Appear Longer
Keep them rounded at the edges rather than squared. An elegant almond shape, or “squoval,” will keep nails from looking severe.

8. Always, Always, Always Sharpen Your Eyeliner
Sharpening your pencil before lining your eyes removes bacteria.

9. Make Cheek Color Last Longer
Choose a blush that's the same texture as your foundationliquid on liquid, cream on cream, powder on powder.

10. Concealer Should Always Follow Foundation
If you put it on first and then blend foundation, the foundation will cover up the concealer.
