Shun the Shine—5 Ways to Remain Matte, No Matter What

Oily skin gets a bad rap. Those overactive glands that keep your t-zone shining bright like a diamond might frustrate you on a day to day basis, but just you wait. When you get older, that excess oil will keep your skin looking fresh, dewy and youthful as your dry-skinned counterparts desperately apply serums hoping to lock in some kind of necessary moisture. It’s great to know what’ll happen in the long term, but what about now? What about those moments when you want to take a photo with friends without looking like you’ve used Crisco for moisturizer? I am here to help you shun the shine and keep it matte. Here are the products and techniques that work for me, your sister in combination oiliness:

Step 1:

Consider your cleanser and moisturizer carefully. There are so many amazing facial cleansers and moisturizers on the market, it can be overwhelming. An oily girl’s first choice should be anything labeled oil free, or oil absorbing—for example Cetaphil’s awesome new DERMACONTROL Oil Control Foam Wash and oil control moisturizer with SPF 30 are made for managing oily, acne-prone skin. Clay based masks and face washes are your friend, for example Kiehls Rare Earth mask and cleanser will help to gently reduce oil if used regularly.

Step 2:

Prime baby prime. As you might already know, I’m a big fan of primer for a variety of reasons. Primer can be an oily gal’s bestie—it will prevent your makeup from sliding off your face, and it will help keep your natural shine at bay. There are primers for every skin type, but to maintain a matte appearance I can personally recommend L’Oreal’s Miracle Blur, IMAN Undercover Agent. Also, I recently discovered Nurturing Force’s Blot Out Offensive Shine and Oil Control Cream when I attended The Makeup Show, and it is everything.

Step 3:

Go with the right coverage. When choosing your foundation, choose wisely—don’t just go with whatever is popular or the finish du jour. In all things, look for keywords like matte and oil control. bareMinerals, Estee Lauder, and Cover Girl are all known for excellent oil control foundations at a range of price points, and you can find shades to match you at the drugstore or the department store.

Step 4:

Powder is your bestie. The product I turn to the most to keep my shine at bay? Good old fashioned powder. A dusting of powder can mean the difference between a shine free T-zone, or a nose and forehead you can see beaming from across a crowded room. I’m a big fan of Urban Decay’s DeSlick products in general—the mattifying gel and finishing spray are amazing, but I especially the translucent pressed powder. Drugstore brand Black Opal makes an amazing Invisible Oil Blocking Loose Powder that is equally effective at a lower price point.

Step 5:

Make room for blotting sheets in your purse. I don’t leave home without them! Use a good blotting sheet before snapping a pic and you’ll be happy to post your selfie to Instagram. My favorites include Boscia blotting linens, Elf essential shine eraser sheets, Clean and Clear oil absorbing sheets, Proactive oil blotter sheets and Tatcha.

Follow my five steps and you’ll be this much closer to having a shine free summer!
