Tommy Hilfiger’s new capsule collection with shoe designer George Esquivel was a long time coming.
Hilfiger first met Esquivel in 2009 when he was nominated for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award. Hilfiger became even more familiar with Esquivel’s work after mentoring in a program that allowed young designers to showcase their pieces during Paris Fashion Week that Esquivel participated in as well. What sold Hilfiger on the young designer was Esquivel made a pair of shoes for him and his wife. The rest is history because Hilfiger + Esquivel will launch September 1st.
“Seeing George’s collection, I thought a collaboration between our brands would be a great initiative, so I asked him to design a men’s shoe for our fall 2013 runway show,” Hilfiger told Women’s Wear Daily. “The result was a beautiful, high-quality piece. Developing it into a capsule collection was a natural and exciting step for the brand.”
The capsule collection consists of brogue and loafer-style shoes handmade in California with local leathers and materials. There are quirky details like bright outsoles, antiqued leather washing, hand-punched perforations, and hand-appliqued logos. Each pair of shoes comes with dust bags with red, white, blu, and brown laces in a numbered box retailing for $399 at Tommy stores in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, London, and Toyko flagships, as well as stores in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Zurich, Vienna, Milan, Dublin, Istanbul and San Diego and Tommy.com.
