Chrissy Teigen has never been one to shy away from sharing her medical stories on social media. Remember that time she tried vaginal steaming? Or, just last week when she got Botox injected into her armpits? Well, now, the Bring The Funny host is opening about a recent health scare that caused excessive swelling in her lips. Over the weekend, Teigen took to Twitter to share highlights from her trip to Utah and the altitude sickness she got as a result.
“Very upset and saddened that my own birth state, Utah, has chosen to poison me with terrible altitude sickness,” Teigen tweeted over the weekend. The 33-year-old star followed up the Tweet with a shot of her lips, which were ballooned to twice their normal size. “Did u know angioedema can be triggered from altitude sickness?” she added. “Learn something new every day! My lip about to explode. Goodbye world.” She also described her lips as being “shiny and hard like glass.”

Of course, leave it to Teigen to incorporate humor into what appears to be a very uncomfortable situation. She and her husband, John Legend, were in Utah to attend a friend’s wedding, making her swollen lips even more inconvenient. “Luke, Meghan, why have you chosen to get married in a place which would try to destroy me?” she asks in a Twitter video from her bed.
So, how does this happen? Being exposed to high altitudes can cause a condition known as angioedema. According to the Mayo Clinic, angioedema causes the deeper layers in your skin to swell as a result of an accumulation of fluid and usually affects loose tissue areas, like the eyes and mouth. In most cases, angioedema is harmless and doesn’t leave any lasting marks, which is probably why Teigen was able to attend the wedding without a trace of swelling. Altitude sickness can also cause headaches, nausea, and disorientation.
The good news: Teigen seems to have recovered quickly. She shared on Instagram Stories that she used an oxygen treatment to help with the swelling, and later Legend shared a stunning photo of the two of them enjoying the festivities sans swollen lips. “”Wedding date! Congratulations to @lukecdillon and @meghan.mackenzie!!!”
