Let me start by saying that I love anything and everything Eastern medicine, holistic, woo-woo as some people would call it…I’m drinking that Kool-Aid hard. I do acupuncture, have tried Reiki, love me some crystals — you get the picture. That’s why when I heard about the healing energy reading offered by Mama Medicine in New York City, I was immediately intrigued.
Mama Medicine (whose real name is Deborah Hanekamp) is a healer who conducts Medicine Reading Ceremonies out of her — very Zen — NYC space. What is a medicine reading, you ask? Even I wasn’t entirely sure. Per the website: “Medicine Readings are a one-on-one, multi-sensory healing experience. They begin with an intuitive aura reading (some refer to this section as heightened therapy) followed by energy balancing, crystal healing, and healing songs to cleanse, bless, and protect. A bespoke healing bath will be prescribed for you at the appointment with spiritual homework. People seeking clarity, feeling stuck, or struggling with some of life’s challenges are drawn to these offerings.”

My medicine healing took place with Luciana Naclerio, Hanekamp’s former apprentice who is now also a healer. Indeed, the first part of this was essentially a therapy session. I’ll spare you the sob story, but I’m currently going through some massive life changes and am at a huge crossroads. So, needless to say, this part was intense, but Naclerio had such calming, positive energy that I instantly felt at ease. And, unlike my regular therapist, she also offered some very interesting (and crazy accurate) intuitive commentary about my situation, as well as some insight as to the spirit guides that were helping me through all of this.
We wrapped up this part of the program by choosing one thing that I wanted to eliminate and cleanse during the next part of the healing (in my case, guilt). I hopped on a heated, rose-quartz-infused table, closed my eyes, and began a set breathing pattern while Naclerio proceeded to chant, sing, and who knows what else. This part was unlike anything else I’ve experienced. It’s hard to describe, but my mind basically went dark, and I felt a variety of physical sensations, specifically an intense tingling in the bottoms of my feet. When I asked Naclerio about this afterward, she said that was indicative of the grounding energy we were trying to promote.

That part of the session lasted about 15 minutes or so, and once it was over, I felt 10 pounds lighter. I’m telling you, I got off that table and felt like I was floating. We then talked about my spiritual homework, which was journaling, and Naclerio prescribed a special healing bath for me to take over the next few days, a key component of all the medicine readings at Mama Medicine. My ingredients: 1 cup of bentonite clay (for grounding), 1 cup Epsom salts (for detoxifying), rosemary essential oil, and rose petals. I was to take this healing bath within three days, and then again whenever I felt like I needed a little extra strength or energetic boost. (FYI, if you live in a tiny apartment and don’t have a tub, you can also mix up the ingredients as prescribed in a bucket of water and dump that over yourself in the shower — apparently that’s also effective.)
I left my medicine reading feeling calmer, more centered, and more peaceful than I have felt in weeks. Note, I didn’t say happy, because it wasn’t that type of feeling, but more of a self-awareness and deeper connection with myself than I’ve ever had before. I felt complete clarity about my current situation and finally had at least a little bit of a sense that everything was going to be okay. Oh, and I did in fact take my prescribed bath two days later and also found it to be extremely therapeutic, calming, and strengthening.
To each his own, but if you’re into this type of stuff and are going through any kind of life change or confusion, I say hop on board this energy healing train ASAP.
