Gwen Stefani Is Unrecognizable With Her Natural Hair

Gwen Stefani has been a powerhouse performer and served as a pillar of the '90s since her No Doubt days, rocking her platinum-blond 'do for so long that she landed on our list of favorite celebrity hair moments from the '90s. No one would ever believe it's not her natural hair color. But even though her roots have always matched the rest of her hair, those blond tresses are actually a dye job.

Her secret? Though she has been known to drastically change her hair after a breakup, Stefani generally has had her hair dyed every week for over 20 years by her hairstylist Danilo. If you're wondering how her hair hasn't fallen out or fried off in that time, don't worry; they've got it down to a science. "We haven't used bleach since 2004," Danilo remarked during an interview with E! News in August 2016. "I developed a high-lift formula that achieves the same effect but saves the quality of her hair." Danilo then went on to detail how he seamlessly styles her locks without damage: daily deep conditioning. In an exclusive chat with Glam, cosmetologist and stylist Ghanima Abdullah confirmed that leave-in conditioner is one way to recover your hair from bleach damage

The question on everyone's lips, though, is what Stefani's natural hair looks like. Underneath all those years of hair dye, the "Hollaback Girl" singer has naturally wavy brunette hair, believe it or not.

Gwen Stefani has naturally stunning brunette hair

Though Gwen Stefani was well into her platinum-blond years by the time her career took off, she's given fans a glimpse at her natural hair on social media through vintage snaps. In June 2020, she posted a throwback pic to Instagram celebrating her brother's birthday, and many were in support of her mousy-brown locks. One user wrote, "I love your natural hair color!" Another asked, "Can you have this hair colour again please."

Unfortunately, the response hasn't always been as positive when Stefani tries out a new look. You know what they say; if it ain't broke, don't fix it. For the season finale of "The Voice" in May 2021, the "Don't Speak" singer debuted some mocha-brown blunt bangs and a ponytail, while keeping the rest of her roots their iconic platinum. It was certainly a bold choice, and viewers didn't hold back when it came to voicing their opinions. "What's up with hair? Not a good look," one user wrote under a selfie of the new 'do. Another quipped, "Too harsh, I like the blonde better!"
