Dakota Johnson's Most Inappropriate Outfits So Far

Dakota Johnson put her name on the map when she starred in the film trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey," but what may be more iconic than Anastasia Steele's relationship with Christian Grey is Johnson's wardrobe. As a self-proclaimed nepo-baby, being the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, she's no stranger to red-carpet fashion.

Back in the 2000s, when Dakota Johnson still looked unrecognizable with her natural hair color, her style largely embodied that of a pre-teen during the Y2K era: lots of layers, newsboy caps, chunky accessories, and skinny jeans. As Dakota's career began to take off in its own right, after the release of "Fifty Shades of Grey" in 2015, her image gained notoriety.

Ever since the world was introduced to Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, it seems like the "Madame Web" star has been method acting. Beginning with her London premiere look for the first "Fifty Shades of Grey" film in February 2015, the actor donned a white, floor-length Saint Laurent gown with a plunging, crystallized neckline. It was the perfect combination of ethereal modesty with just a touch of seduction, which has been her style mantra ever since. However, since several of her looks lie on the delicate, thin, and revealing side, she's been prone to a few wardrobe malfunctions over the years. Should Dakota ditch her stylist entirely because of the inappropriate outfits she's worn, or tough it out for the sake of beauty?

Dakota Johnson forgot to double-check her look in the mirror before the 2017 Hollywood Film Awards

Dakota Johnson is experimental and daring with her style, but when she attempted something unheard of at the Hollywood Film Awards in November 2017, it fell short. The "Materialists" star stuck to her expected silhouette and went sans shirt on the red carpet, donning a red, two-button Calvin Klein suit. The look was sexy and powerful, fully giving girl-boss vibes, until you see what shoes Johnson decided to wear.

If you blink, you might miss it, but Johnson wore two different shoes to the function. The left kitten heel is a standard black strappy sandal, while the right one is bejeweled across the strap, coordinating with her blinged-out choker. We're not sure if she was going for an artsy, avant-garde vibe or lost track of time before running out the door; either way, it was an odd choice for a red carpet. While this technically could have been strategic, we don't expect to be seeing celebs rocking two contrasting shoes anytime soon.

Dakota Johnson chose the wrong dress for her interview with James Corden

Even the most beautiful of dresses isn't suited for every occasion. Dakota Johnson discovered this the hard way when she opted for a little red dress that revealed a little too much when she went on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" in January 2022.

"Are you good? Are you alright?" Corden playfully asked as Johnson was fiddling with the hem of her skirt. As she continued to dance around in her seat, legs crossed, Corden couldn't help but notice that the actor seemed a bit uncomfortable. When he offered her his jacket, she playfully responded, "I'm okay, it's nothing nobody hasn't ever seen."

While the garment was stunning, it certainly wasn't equipped for late night. The long-sleeved Magda Butrym number reportedly retails for $1,450, at the time of writing. Johnson paired the garment with a pair of matching suede pumps. Though it was a fierce monochromatic moment, it might've been better suited to a red carpet.

Dakota Johnson can't figure out the right interview outfit

Dakota Johnson would have to learn the same lesson she apparently didn't grasp on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" two years later on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in June 2024. She went on the late-night show to promote her film "Daddio," when she had to think on her feet to avoid a wardrobe malfunction.

They cut away from Kimmel and Johnson with the live studio audience to show a clip from the film, but when they cut back to the television host and the actor, she was holding on for dear life — to her dress, that is. The black gown she was wearing featured metallic straps that came unhooked. The result was Johnson fiddling with her dress for the rest of the interview, trying to hold it up and covering the region that might be exposed. Though Johnson looked radiant, as per usual, her outfit choice could have been a bit less distracting.

Jimmy Fallon prevented Dakota Johnson from having a nip-slip on air

Of Dakota Johnson's inappropriate talk-show outfits, the one she wore for her interview on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" in June 2025 may take the cake. The jury's still out on whether or not she'll ever nail down an appropriate interview outfit, but at least she was willing to admit it. As is routine for Johnson at this point, she was fiddling with the top of her dress when Fallon asked if she was okay, to which she said, "This is the wrong outfit."

The "Fifty Shades of Grey" alum decided on a long-sleeved LBD with a gaping neckline. It seems as though Johnson's stylists failed to make sure that she comfortably fit in the garment before sending her to the soundstage. She and Fallon chatted for a few seconds when she swiftly looked down and pleaded to Fallon, "Please tell me if there's a problem." After asking for a blanket, Fallon handed her a tissue that she tucked into her neckline. Later, the talk-show host gifted her a cardigan that she draped over herself, and let out a sigh of relief. Though Johnson never actually experienced the wardrobe malfunction she was fearing, she let her look distract her from the entirety of her interview. Perhaps a turtleneck for the next one?

While Dakota Johnson has clearly had her fair share of awkward wardrobe moments, at least she isn't one of the celebs who wore inappropriate outfits to other people's weddings!
