Tate McRae's Inappropriate iHeartRadio Music Awards Outfit Looked Like She Just Got Out Of Bed
Perhaps we're being a bit "Greedy" when we say we were disappointed by Tate McRae's look at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in April 2024. The "It's OK I'm OK" singer graced the red carpet in a Rabanne slip dress that could've easily passed for a nightie that took us back to Vanessa Trump's inappropriately timed slip-dress phase. The metallic-gold garment featured lace trimming, and McRae completed the look with some Jimmy Choo pumps and statement jewelry from SWAY.
The "Sports Car" singer wore her trademark honey tresses in soft curls and did a subtle, peachy makeup look. Though McRae added elements to elevate the look, the garment still fell short, literally. However, her fans had a different opinion when she posted some photos from the night throughout a miscellaneous Instagram dump. One user asked where they could buy the dress from, while others added that they loved the dress. Though it was far from our favorite look the singer has donned, it certainly checks out for this point of Tate McRae's stunning style transformation. The pop star has built her image on a Y2K aesthetic, highlighting the cross-section between comfort and femininity, but she's had a few missteps along the way.
What led to Tate McRae's sleepy blunder at the iHeart Radio Music Awards?
Tate McRae was merely 17 years old when she got her first taste of virality with her hit "You Broke Me First," so by the time she was hitting the red carpets and gracing stages around the world, she barely had the time to develop her aesthetic. "I remember when I was 16, all I wanted to do was wear baggy clothes and big T-shirts, and I didn't want to experiment with anything," McRae told Elle in February 2025. It wasn't until she moved out to California at 17 that she branched out style-wise, but it still didn't particularly feel right. "I started dressing in hot pink dresses and very girly. And I was like, 'This is not me. I am way more tomboy than this,'" she added.
Eventually, the "Think Later" singer was able to find a happy medium between comfortable and feminine, leading to looks just like the Y2K nightie she wore to the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards. The mini definitely leaned towards the more girly side of her style, but the noughties-sleepwear element highlighted the comfort aspect that first drew the singer to this era of fashion.
Tate McRae has let us down on the red carpet before
Unfortunately, Tate McRae found her way onto our list of the worst-dressed celebrities at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards. The fashion crime in question consisted of a nearly see-through white tank top, a steampunk-esque black skirt with metallic embellishments, and a pair of knee-high slouch boots. It was certainly out there, even for the "Exes" singer. The silhouette and proportions were all over the place, not to mention the fact that it seemed like she had forgotten to pick out a proper top.
Flash forward to the Capital FM Jingle Ball in 2024, and it seems as though McRae threw together an outfit last minute. For the look, the singer opted for a deerstalker hat with an oversized raincoat and another pair of knee-high slouch boots. Not only was this look lackluster, but it didn't follow McRae's expected style or silhouette in the slightest. Where are the vibrant colors and patterns? The movable fabrics that allow her to do her rigorous choreography? These looks can only be explained by McRae's fashion ethos, which, as she explained to Elle, includes "whatever made me feel like a badass on stage, regardless of if anyone liked it. If I just walked out and felt cool, that's what I would usually throw on."
