Selena Gomez's Inappropriate Wedding Guest Dress That The Internet Loved Anyway

Selena Gomez and her fiancé Benny Blanco spent a weekend in August 2025 celebrating the wedding of rapper David Burd, also known as "Lil Dicky," and Kristin Batalucco. The views were scenic, the bride's dress was stunning, the groom probably cried, and Gomez wore the wrong color.

The "Wizards of Waverly Place" alum decided on a cherry red halter-top gown with matching kitten heels. As we all know by now, there are several intricacies when it comes to knowing what not to wear to a wedding. Firstly, there are strict rules around what one absolutely must not wear to the nuptials, such as wearing white, so you're not clashing with the bride. Not wearing black is another widely known rule, so it doesn't seem like you're at a funeral or disapprove of the union. And in certain cultures, wearing red to a wedding is extremely frowned upon.

The phenomenon originates from East and South Asian cultures, where the bride traditionally wears red. However, Gomez was at an American wedding, and the difference between wedding dress codes is vast. In the U.S., wearing red can point to the old wives' tale that the one wearing it slept with the groom, or that she showed up the bride. However, it could also simply mean that it's the dress the singer wanted to wear to the wedding. She wasn't the only one who opted for the hue, as she was matching with her beau's mom and sister. Regardless of her motivation behind the palette, her fans couldn't get enough. Celebrity chef Rachael Ray commented on Gomez's Instagram saying, "Looking fabulous as always." Another added, "Stunning."

Selena Gomez loves to rock the red

The dress Selena Gomez wore to Lil Dicky's 2025 wedding wasn't the first time one of her gowns had landed her in the hot seat; in fact, it wasn't the first time she stole the show in a red-toned gown. What can we say? Selena Gomez loves to dress for revenge.

For the 2024 Golden Globes, the "Only Murders in the Building" star decided on a red satin Giorgio Armani Privé gown with cutouts and flower details on the bodice and an A-symmetrical hoop skirt. It was giving a 20th-century showgirl mixed with the overzealous textures of the 2000s. Though Gomez looked stunning, as always, the dress wasn't one of our favorites. However, her fans had slightly different opinions. "Mother is mothering. You looked so beautiful Selena and red suits you so well," one wrote on Instagram.

Then, in January 2024, Gomez stepped out onto the Emmys red carpet in an Oscar de la Renta gown, illuminated by 450,000 maroon sequins to make for a sheer illusion. In theory, the garment was stunning and Gomez looked radiant; however, the geometric pattern of the sequins overpowered the nude illusion, making for a clunky and awkward silhouette.
