Diane Lane's Favorite Red Carpet Look Is A Lesson In Confidence
Diane Lane's acting career began in the theater in 1971 at age 6, and by age 12, she was performing alongside Meryl Streep. For the next five decades, she starred in dozens of movies, including 1983's "The Outsiders" and 2002's "Unfaithful," and TV series, including 2024's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans." She even loaned her voice to Pixar to play Riley's mom in "Inside Out" and its sequel. To say she's had more than a few occasions to hit the red carpet would be an understatement.
Sometimes you feel wonderful on the world stage, while some celebs have even admitted that they regret certain red carpet outfits. So, what would Lane — a staple on international red carpets for decades — say is her best red carpet look of all time? She told InStyle in 2015 that it was her eggplant-hued, Grecian-inspired gown for the 63rd Venice Film Festival in August 2006, and the reason it ranks highly for her is because she felt utterly confident in it.
More about Diane Lane's confident turn in Venice
Earlier in the day at the 2006 Venice Film Festival, Diane Lane promoted the film "Hollywoodland," co-starring Ben Affleck, in what appeared to be a Hervé Léger bandage dress, which was very popular at the time. Though she looked gorgeous in this outfit, her nighttime look for the red carpet premiere was what really made her stand out.
In 2015, she told InStyle, "I had just bobbed my hair, and I was going without a bra, and I felt fabulous. I think confidence comes from, almost in a way, not caring. Almost in a way of being, 'This is me, take it or leave it.'" Naturally, fans took it. A 2024 Reddit post of the look had fans swooning 18 years later, with one user writing, "She has always been hot. I love this woman." Another added, "She's so incredibly beautiful. Elegant, classy and sexy as h***."
Previously, a mindset coach told us one of the best ways to own your self-confidence is to honor your assets, and Lane certainly did that in 2006. In fact, we think that she could take a page from the celebrities who have re-worn outfits on the red carpet and bring this timeless beauty back again.
