The Outdated Denim Trend That Isn't Worth A Spot In Your Closet In 2026

Oh jeans, how we love thee. They're so low-maintenance, reliable, ready to go with anything in our closets, and happy to be dressed up or dressed down. However, our love story has run its course with one outdated fashion trend that should be purged from your closet in 2026: distressed denim. If you're unsure if yours fall in the distressed category, we're talking about the jeans that come tatty –- they typically have intentional rips, frayed hems, and faded washes. Distressed styles are meant to give off an edgy, tough rocker kind of vibe.

And just like cuffed jeans, the outdated denim trend that made a comeback in 2025, distressed denim had a moment last year. Street stylers and celebs were wearing them with a high-low twist, pairing them with elegant and sophisticated pieces. Think a preppy top and Mary Jane heels, or a tweed jacket and loafers. Some fashionistas embraced the full-on grunge aesthetic with a leather jacket, band T-shirt, and biker boots. But the fashion tides are turning, as they always do, and the seas appear to be flowing in the direction of loud luxury.

What to wear instead of distressed denim in 2026

If you were starting to get a bit of ennui with quiet luxury in 2025, you're not alone. Thankfully, fashion designers have decided to turn things up a notch for 2026, embracing a louder luxury in their collections. Animal prints, faux fur, in-your-face colors, and chunky jewelry are all on the agenda. So, where does that leave our beloved denim?

Trousers, bootcuts, and barrel legs are all still going strong, and stovepipes and cigarette silhouettes are creeping back in. And for a little something-something, you will even see embellished pairs hit the racks. Darker washes are definitely the go-to, as are black and creamy shades, but the theme with all of these is the same: They're clean instead of distressed. That doesn't mean you can't add your edgy flare to your pair, though. This year, feel on-trend by wearing your jeans as the elegant basic that you then add to to give your outfit personality.
