No One Will Ever Forget Joy Villa's Inappropriate Outfit Praising Trump At The 2020 Grammys
After the 2026 Grammys, many celebrities earned backlash for trying to make a political statement by wearing a pin on their outfits. For A-listers, a small message on a pin may have been a safe way to communicate their beliefs without getting too political at an award ceremony. For some netizens, it came across as a means for the privileged to say something without saying anything at all. However, even the harshest critics of a statement pin would have likely preferred it to Joy Villa's inappropriate outfit at the 2020 Grammys.
To celebrate a night of the year's best music, Villa opted for a latex gown with "Trump 2020" written on the front in bold white lettering and "Impeached & Re-Elected" on the back. The musician's outfit became even more of an eyesore when paired with a heavily contrasting white coat cape that had stars on it against a glittery blue backdrop.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Desi Allinger, the designer of the controversial dress, revealed that she had added the coat cape because it seemed like a fashion choice that Melania Trump would make. So, it appears she's all too familiar with the most outdated outfits that Melania has been caught wearing. Even some of Villa's accessories for the night had a political message, as she carried a glitzy black clutch with the GOP logo and heels in the colors of the American flag. As a whole, the outfit seemed like a better fit for the Republican National Convention than the Grammys. However, Villa couldn't be happier about her choice, as she told THR, "I feel like Miss America in this; it's all couture."
Joy Villa has mistaken the Grammys for a political event numerous times
Joy Villa is responsible for several of the most inappropriate outfits in Grammy history. In 2019, she walked the red carpet cosplaying as Donald Trump's border wall. To mimic the structure's steel, she wore a silver cloak dress that looked more like tinfoil. She later took off the cloak to reveal that she was wearing a white gown that had the design of a brick wall in the front and "Build The Wall" written in red lettering on the back.
For accessories, she went with some barbed wire on the shoulders, a spiky headpiece, and a bright red bag with "Make America Great Again" written on it. That outfit almost made her 2017 controversial Grammys look appear tame by comparison. Back then, she had worn a skintight blue gown with "Make America Great Again" written in the front in bold silver letters and "Trump 2020" in giant silver rhinestones on the back.
In a February 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the conservative singer explained the thought process behind her most controversial red carpet outfits, saying, "I grew up in theater, so I've always used costume as a way to express myself." She added, "It's an opportunity to show the world who I am on the red carpet, which to me is the same as a stage. I approach it as a show. I want to 'wow' people." Villa also revealed that she had found the worst-dressed stars at award shows to always be more memorable than the best-dressed. So, she might be happy to know that she made the list of the worst-dressed celebs at the 2025 Grammys.
