The Affair Rumors That Haunt Emma Stone's Marriage

According to many people on the internet, Emma Stone and her frequent collaborator Yorgos Lanthimos are too close for comfort. After teaming up for "The Favourite" in 2018, the Greek director and the Oscar winner realized they were a match made in professional heaven because they went on to work together on three more feature-length films. Stone even notably won her second best actress Oscar for Lanthimos' 2023 film "Poor Things."

Over the course of making these movies together, the "Bugonia" star and Lanthimos naturally struck up a friendship. At first, the internet loved to see the two professional collaborators casually hanging out. However, their frequent hangouts eventually gave rise to speculation that Lanthimos, who has been married to Ariane Labed since 2013, and Stone, who wed Dave McCary in 2020, were having an affair. The infidelity chatter went into overdrive in February 2026 after the "Kinds of Kindness" director took to Instagram to share two photos of Stone from the BAFTAs.

While one X user labeled the genre of snaps "Boyfriend photography," someone else wrote, "The kind of photos you take of someone you're madly in love with." On a similar note, another X user mused that the photos were reminiscent of the loving snaps that Kirsten Dunst shared of her husband, Jesse Plemons, on Instagram. One netizen might have been rolling their eyes as they wrote, "What is this, their 15th [soft launch]?" Another person pointed out that Stone bore a passing resemblance to Labed.

Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have proven to be really good friends

In a November 2023 interview with The New York Times, Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos spoke about their working relationship. "I obviously have full-blown, very intense trust in him," Stone explained. The filmmaker later shared the reason for their frequent collaborations in a June 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "First of all, we get along as people, and we want to spend time together, and we've become very good friends," Lanthimos divulged. "That helps a lot in figuring out how we want to work and being able to trust one another and explore areas that we normally wouldn't explore."

We witnessed a huge testament to Stone and Lanthimos' friendship on the set of their film "Bugonia." In a November 2025 People interview, the "Easy A" star shared that she had only agreed to shave her head for Lanthimos' Oscar-nominated flick on the condition that the director also follow suit. Once Lanthimos held up his end of the bargain, Stone went bald as well.

Once upon a time, Stone was undoubtedly one of the many red-haired celebrities who made everyone want to try the flaming-hot look. At one point, she had even proved that the 'flippy bob' is the most fun anyone can have with the short hair trend. And it seems that Lanthimos is partially responsible for the dramatic hair transformation of Emma Stone. Despite what the rumor mill might say, it doesn't seem like Lanthimos is responsible for any friction in Stone's marriage to Dave McCary, because they do just appear to be very good friends.
