In March 2025, Dolly Parton faced the unspeakable pain of saying goodbye to her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean. The 82-year-old died in Nashville, Tennessee, with no cause of death having been confirmed. Despite being married to one of the world's most famous stars, Carl Dean was a private man, but Parton has still let her legions of fans know how she felt about her late husband, and what that means for her love life going forward.
"There's a lot of rumors going around, but I'm not dating anybody," the "Jolene" singer confirmed to her Dollywood audience nearly a year later, per Entertainment Tonight. "I don't think I'll ever be married but once. I think Carl Dean is waiting for me on the other side. I've just been doing a lot of writing, a lot of thinking, a lot of praying." Parton knew that she'd found her soulmate, and she made her enduring love for Dean abundantly clear in a tribute post that she left on Instagram just after he died: "I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old. We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together." She declared that Dean would "always be the star of my life story" before dedicating her song "If You Hadn't Been There" to him.
Parton has also been able to deal with her grief by portraying him in "Dolly: A True Original Musical," which debuted in 2025. "That's the hardest loss that anyone could ever have, to lose the person you love the most," she told People in November. "The fact that I've portrayed him so beautiful in the show, and seeing him every night like that when I watch the show, it's healing in its way. It's almost like he's never gone."
Carl Dean was the love of Dolly Parton's life
In her October 2025 Instagram post, Dolly Parton told fans that she'd neglected her own health when Carl Dean got sick. Known as caregiver burnout, this is a common phenomenon among those who are deeply in love, the way Parton and Dean were. "I get very emotional when people bring it up," the "9 to 5" hitmaker told "Today" in May 2025. "I've loved him since I was 18 years old. It's a big adjustment just trying to change patterns and habits. I'll do fine ... but I'll always miss him, of course, and always love him."
The pair met in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1964, on the day that Parton moved there after graduating high school. In her book "Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics," Parton recalled that Dean was driving down the street she was walking past, and he called out to her, "You're gonna get sunburnt out here, little lady!" (via E! News). This was well before Dolly Parton's biggest hair moments that had heads turning, but even while Parton's star rose, Dean never spoke to the press or tried to steal her thunder. "He's a very complex, involved person. I never get tired of him ... We're different, yet we're just so compatible," she explained on AXS TV before his death. That's the real story of Dolly Parton's marriage in her own words.
Though 2025 brought some health scares for the country legend, who turned 80 in January 2026, she is adamant that her time to reunite with her beloved hasn't quite come yet. "Do I look sick to you?" she said in an October 2025 Instagram video. "I'm working hard here ... I don't think God is through with me and I ain't done working."
