Messy Affair Rumors Haunt Beyoncé's Marriage
Beyoncé and Jay-Z are practically the definition of a Hollywood power couple. Between Beyoncé becoming the most awarded artist in Grammy history and Jay-Z's massive influence on the global hip-hop industry, they have solidified their status as two of the biggest music icons ever. However, given the pair's larger-than-life reputation, it has been difficult to conceal the red flags in Beyoncé and Jay-Z's relationship. For one, there's the question of their 13-year age gap; Beyoncé and Jay-Z first started dating when she was 19 and he was 32. While many have mentioned the potential power imbalances in an age gap relationship like theirs as a cause for concern, cheating allegations have haunted their relationship far more.
In 2014, a security tape showing Beyoncé's sister Solange attacking Jay-Z in an elevator at a Met Gala party leaked to the public. Some tabloids theorized that Solange was upset about an interaction between Jay-Z and his alleged mistress at the time, Rachel Roy. The latter subsequently denied the affair to Daily Mail. While Jay-Z hasn't directly addressed the allegations with Roy, the "99 Problems" rapper has admitted to cheating on Beyoncé since.
In an interview with The New York Times Style Magazine, Jay-Z discussed how his mental health impacted his relationships. "You have to survive. So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode what happen? You shut down all emotions. So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can't connect," Jay-Z said. "In my case, like, it's deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity..."
Inside Jay-Z and Beyoncé's infidelity allegations
Both Jay-Z and Beyoncé have faced cheating allegations from the media throughout their 18-year marriage. When Beyoncé, who has been in her country era for over two years now, dropped her critically-acclaimed visual album "Lemonade" in 2016, she put everything about her relationship with Jay-Z on the table. Through her music, the "Break My Soul" singer discussed the erosion of her marriage, dealing with Jay-Z's infidelity, and, finally, being able to forgive and move forward.
In the title track of Jay-Z's "4:44" album one year later, the hip-hop mogul responds to his wife with a sincere, public apology. Jay-Z references how the birth of his and Beyoncé's twins Rumi and Sir made him reconsider how he treated her: "I apologize, often womanize / Took for my child to be born / See through a woman's eyes / Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles." Jay-Z raps "I apologize" seven times during the song, clearly trying to make amends for treating Queen Bey like anything less than royalty.
The cheating allegations lobbed against Beyoncé, however, are based on rumor and fan speculation more than anything else. Many fans have theorized that the icon is having an affair with her bodyguard of over two decades, Julius de Boer. An alleged photo of de Boer with red lipstick smudged on his mouth while escorting Beyoncé made the rounds online in 2014, shortly after Jay-Z's fight with Solange at the Met Gala that same year. More recently, fans have wondered if de Boer was the inspiration for one of the most sensual songs on 2024's "Cowboy Carter," which is interestingly titled "Bodyguard." However, neither Beyoncé, Jay-Z, nor de Boer himself have given these rumors any attention.
