Carrie Underwood Went Back To Her Natural Hair Color And The Before & After Pics Are Stunning

Carrie Underwood has had a stunning hair transformation throughout her time in the public eye — and she's not done yet. When the world first met her, the singer was 21 years old with bright blond curly hair that rested on her shoulders. Two decades later, and Underwood has cemented her status as having some of the most impressive blond locks in country music. She frequently sports voluminous blowouts that provide bounce and movement as she wows fans onstage. Regardless of the style, whether it's big curls or pulled back in a ponytail, Underwood is always a blond. However, it turns out the light tresses she has become known for are far from the color she was born with.

In a 2025 Instagram post, Underwood revealed that her natural hue is actually several shades darker what she's been sporting the past few decades. "The last time I saw my natural hair color, I was probably about 12 years old," she captioned the post, "but I thought it might be time to give it a second chance." The newly-debuted look combines deep caramel with blond lowlights, making Underwood's natural shade a trendy and low maintenance cashmere brond color. The hue compliments her tan skin and hazel eyes, and fits her overall style well. The singer seemed smitten with her new-yet-old color, and was happy to "get back to [her] roots."

Carrie Underwood has been hiding her real hair color and texture for years

Carrie Underwood's hair has undergone a lot of changes since her "American Idol" audition, where Underwood looked borderline unrecognizable. She's rarely revealed her natural look when performing or making appearances, but the country music star occasionally posts throwback photos from her youth displaying her slightly darker color. One Instagram photo shows Underwood in the mid-'90s visiting the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville as a pre-teen, and her natural color looks as lovely then as it does now.

In addition to dying her hair a light blond for the entirely of her career, the singer has also kept her natural texture under wraps. Underwood's husband, Mike Fisher, has shared candid photos of her at home with a much more casual vibe. The soft, almost crimped, waves she sports in these photos are very different from the large ripples that the singer has become synonymous with. It's easy to picture Underwood's new color paired with her natural texture, and a simple down 'do would look effortless on her.
