Before & After Pics Of Celebs Who Shaved Their Heads For A Role
It's always astounding how far an actor will go to immerse themselves in their roles. Many turn to method acting and never break from their characters for months, and sometimes longer. Lady Gaga famously became Patrizia Reggiani for "House of Gucci," telling Vogue, "I will be fully honest and transparent: I lived as her for a year and a half. And I spoke with an accent for nine months of that ... Off camera, I never broke. I stayed with her." However, while the "Paparazzi" singer didn't have to drastically change her looks to play the heir to the fashion house, others went so far as to shear off all their hair. Some, like Natalie Portman, even did it while playing their characters, as the scene had to look super realistic.
We can't imagine how both terrifying and thrilling it is to completely shave your head, but looking at these actors as inspiration, it may be time for you to buzz your hair, as there are some major benefits. We're talking less time spent getting ready, not having to buy hair products, and simply looking like a major trend-setter. "I think every woman should [shave their head] at least once in their life. I've never felt more free or more in tune with my beauty. I couldn't hide behind my hair," Joey King shared with Allure. It seems the celebs who went short don't regret their choice, especially if it meant enhancing their roles, and these before-and-after pics show just how different they look with shaved heads.
Emma Stone shaved her hair for a trade-off
Emma Stone has had a dramatic hair transformation during her acting career, and she's always had enviable red locks, which she bravely let go of for "Bugonia." In the film, her character's kidnappers believe she's able to contact her alien leaders through her hair, so off it went. As reported by People, Stone was down to shave her head if the director, Yorgos Lanthimos, did his as well. We think that's a pretty fair deal, but the actor shared, "It was exciting, but it wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be to shave his head."
Demi Moore's G.I. Jane role inspired her daughters to cut their hair
Demi Moore's stunning style transformation proves she only gets better with age; "G.I. Jane" just shows that she wasn't afraid to cut of her long locks. And Moore continued the look for the film's premiere. While looking back on the moment with People, the "Ghost" star revealed that the buzz cut inspired her daughters to go shorter, as well. "Rumer played my daughter in the film, and so it was a shared moment across the board ... It was sweet," Moore gushed.
Joey King shaved her head three times for movie roles
Joey King didn't just shave her head once, but three times — for "The Dark Knight Rises," "Wish I Was Here," and "The Act." After filming the latter, in which she played Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, she shared with IndieWire, "I do think [shaving my head] was so helpful in terms of not being attached to this one thing that I feel like a lot of people try to tell you to associate with beauty." King added, "I also really loved the way it put me in a mindset to play these characters that I was playing."
Danai Gurira's shaved head initially freaked her out
Fans were used to seeing Danai Gurira with long locs for "The Walking Dead," which she revealed on "Live with Kelly and Mark" was a wig. However, while she always had short hair, the "Black Panther" star had to completely go bald for her role in the Marvel film. "First, I was like, really freaked out," she told Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest, adding that she couldn't recognize herself. But as Ripa pointed out, Gurira's face is so stunning that she can pull off any look.
Natalie Portman had to have her head buzzed in one take
There are few actors as diverse as Natalie Portman — she can play anything from a troubled ballet dancer to an anarchist in a dystopian world. In "V for Vendetta," her character is forced to have her head shaved, and instead of faking it, Portman went all in and did it on camera. Because this had to be filmed, there was no room for errors, and the actor revealed to Vanity Fair that her hairstylist did the honors. "It was very dramatic and a lot of pressure to get it in one take," she stated.
Florence Pugh had a strange reaction to shaving her hair
Florence Pugh flexed her tearjerker abilities in the 2024 drama "We Live in Time," where viewers saw her fall in love, have a child, and then get diagnosed with ovarian cancer. To keep her look as realistic as possible, Pugh had her on-screen husband, played by Andrew Garfield, use clippers on her hair, giving her a short buzz cut. While the "Thunderbolts" star was committed to the role, she told British Vogue, "[Shaving] it was really bizarre ... My body went into a bit of trauma from it. I was cold all the time."
Amandla Stenberg felt free with her close-cropped hair
Fans have seen Amandla Stenberg rock everything from super-long braids to bouncy curls, but her buzz cut is one of our fave looks. While she did it for the historical film "Where Hands Touch," in which she played a girl in Nazi Germany, the actor completely embraced her new 'do. "Shaving my head was wild ... It was so freeing. This summer, I came out as gay, and I must say, having no hair made me feel even more comfortable with my gender and sexuality," Stenberg shared in an essay for InStyle (via Pop Sugar).
It was Charlize Theron's idea to shave her head for Mad Max: Fury Road
Charlize Theron's reason for having cropped hair while playing Furiosa in "Mad Max: Fury Road" was actually so relatable. In an interview with Bustle, she shared, "I had done a press junket, my hair was really fried. I had a night where I thought, what if we just shave it?" Another upside to a shaved head was not having to style any locks, with Theron stating, "I was 20 minutes early to everything in my life." If saving precious time isn't a good reason to go short, we don't know what is.
